âAnd when I arrived,â said McPhee, âthere was Owen orchestrating the crowd!â
âManaging it,â said Owen. âI was getting it to calm down.â
âIt didnât look like that to me,â said McPhee.
âYou should have been there a moment or two earlier!â
âI came as quickly as I could,â said McPhee, taking this as a reproach. âThe car was being cleaned.â
Garvin sighed. He was the Commandant of the Cairo Police, weary in the ways of Egyptian policing.
âAs far as I can see, there was no actual violence.â
âThree constables have lodged a complaint,â said McPhee stiffly. âUndue violence perpetrated against their persons.â
âShe kicked them up the backside,â said Owen.
âThatâs what I meant, sir,â said McPhee, turning to Garvin. âWhose side is he on?â
âIf that was the extent of the violence,â said Garvin, âIâve seen worse cases: about twenty times a day.â
âItâs the principle of the thing,â said McPhee severely. Garvin sighed again.
âIs there any reason,â he asked, âwhy we should give any time to this whatsoever?â
Owen hesitated. âYes, there is.â
He told them about the possible development of the Derb Aiah area. McPhee, especially, listened with interest.
âBut that would take in the tekke,â he said.
âThe little mosque with the blue tiles? All sparkle?â
âYes.â
McPhee knew his mosques. He was an enthusiast less about things architectural than about things religious and collected shrines and feast-days and old Cairo saints with avidity. Garvin tolerated this eccentricity as he tolerated Owenâs. âIt would be terrible if that was to go,â McPhee said.
âYou think it could cause trouble?â Garvin asked Owen.
âI think thereâs something else that would cause more.â He told them about the proposed north-south road. âThrough the City!â said McPhee, appalled.
âItâll never happen!â said Garvin dismissively.
âThereâs a planning application in.â
âDoesnât mean a thing.â
âThe Khediveâs keen.â
âMeans even less.â
âI donât know about that. It could be another case like the Agricultural Society.â
âWhat?â said Garvin, caught off-balance and looking at Owen as if he had suddenly realized that he was suffering from sunstroke.
âWhen he couldnât get anywhere, he got on and did it himself.â
He told them about the founding of the Society.
Garvin looked at his watch.
âYes, well, thank you. Can I suggest you follow up other things? Both of you.â
